Public Speaking: Tips for Kids

By now we have a good idea of the Diversity of Public Speaking topics out there.
That being said, there’s a vast difference between kids practicing Public Speaking in front of their parents, and speaking in front of a larger audience. After all, even the most seasoned speakers have been known to freeze when they find themselves on stage.

The following are some tips that will help your children to get a hold of those Nerves, and deliver a fabulous speech!

Let them pick something they like

No matter how many interesting topics you present your child with, they will always be most comfortable speaking about something they truly care about!

To do: You know what your child likes the best, be it Video Games or Mermaids! Gently nudge them towards talking about it, and you might just be surprised at the flair with which they speak!

Practice, Practice, Practice

The age old adage, “Practice makes Perfect’, finds itself pretty handy here!

To do: The more they practice, the more comfortable they will feel when speaking in front of others. Encourage your little ones, by first gathering an intimate audience of close family members, to hear them talk. This can then be extended to their close friends, and finally, strangers as well!

Let them Embrace the Silence

Children love Noise, so what happens when they are in a room that is filled with Silence before they speak?

To do: Help them quell those jitters that the silence can bring. You want to tell them that the very reason that the audience is silent is because they are patiently waiting to hear them speak. What’s more, they can use these precious moments of silence to gather their thoughts before they start speaking.

Expressing themselves Freely

Public speaking is far from being a chore. Rather, it’s a means to express ourselves with a profusion of joy!

To do<: Tell your kids that they must use Animated Facial Expressions, and Positive Body Language, when speaking. Further, they must speak with their ‘heads held high.’ It’s not only about ‘what they say’, it’s ‘How they say it!’

At EuroKids, we give a big thumbs up to parents encouraging children to Speak in Public. It’s a great way for kids to develop their confidence, and overcome any fears and insecurities they might have.
